Bioactive Manuka honey

Bioactive Manuka honey is produced from the Leptospermum species of plants which have high levels of a naturally occurring compound known as Methylglyoxal (MGO). There are over 80 Leptospermum species in Australia.

Effective against antibiotic resistant and sensitive bacterial pathogens bioactive Manuka honey and has been shown to have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Viruses and Bacteria.

Globally there is a startling increase in antibiotic resistance and wound infections that are posing a serious threat to the public in general. This antibiotic resistance is further compounded by the fact that very few knew antibiotics are being developed.

Therefore, bioactive Manuka honey is now gaining acceptance in modern medicine as an alternative therapeutic strategy owing to its antimicrobial activity and healing properties.

Methylglyoxal (MGO)

Methylglyoxal (MGO) has been scientifically shown to be the major compound responsible for Manuka honeys antimicrobial activity.

MGO is recognised globally as the standard measuring system for antimicrobial activity in Manuka honey. We use this proven method to grade all our Manuka honey which is independently tested and verified to certify the levels of Methylglyoxal in every batch.

There is another measuring system that is commonly used in NZ known as UMF. To avoid confusion the MGO to UMF conversion chart (below) translates Manuka honey's antimicrobial levels between the two measuring systems.

We follow strict guidelines using clear methods and markers to ensure all our Manuka honey is pure and authentic. There are three accepted naturally occurring chemical markers used to identify authentic Manuka honey. Methylglyoxal (MGO), Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Leptosperin which are all present in Manuka honey in varying concentrations shown in the test results of each batch.
